How to use Ledger Wallet with Flare via MetaMask
Hardware wallets like Ledger Nano X and Nano S are considered one of the safest ways to manage your FLR and other digital assets, as they keep your private keys offline and out of reach. With a Ledger, your assets remain under your control as long as you keep your recovery phrase secret and always double-check transaction details before hitting confirm.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to set up your Ledger device with the MetaMask browser extension so you can securely manage FLR and SGB on Flare.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure you have the following:
- A Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, or Nano X device.
- The Google Chrome or Brave browser installed on your computer.
- Your Ledger device is ready for its initial setup.
One-time setup
The following steps are only required once when first setting up your devices
Install MetaMask
- Navigate to the official MetaMask website: https://metamask.io
- Download and install the browser extension.
- Complete the initial MetaMask setup process.
Install Ledger Live & initialize your device
- Download and install the Ledger Live application from the official site: https://www.ledger.com/start
- Open Ledger Live, then follow the on-screen instructions to initialize your Ledger device with a recovery phrase. Write it down carefully, and store it in a secure, offline location. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone or enter it into any website or application. This phrase is the master key to all your crypto assets.
- Set a secure PIN code for your Ledger device.
- Install the latest Ledger device firmware to ensure the best security and compatibility.
Install the Flare App on Ledger
Next, we’re going to be installing the Flare app on your Ledger device. To install the Flare app, follow these steps:
- Open the Manager tab on Ledger Live.
- Connect your Ledger device and unlock with the PIN code you just created.
- If prompted, enable “manager” on the device itself.
- Search for “Flare” in the “App Catalog.” (If the Flare app does not appear on search, “Update firmware,” restart the Ledger Live client, then search again)
- Once Ledger Live is updated and relaunched, search again and click “Install” on the Flare Network app.
Wait for your Ledger to finish processing. It’ll let you know when the Flare app is successfully installed.
Connect Ledger to MetaMask
This step links your Ledger's security with MetaMask's interface. Your keys remain safely on the Ledger, while MetaMask allows you to interact with applications on Flare.
Prerequisites for connecting
- Connect your Ledger device to your computer via USB.
- Unlock your Ledger and open the Flare app.
- Close the Ledger Live app: MetaMask cannot connect to your Ledger device if the Ledger Live application is open. Please ensure it is fully closed before proceeding.
Connection steps
1) In MetaMask, select the Flare or Songbird network from the network dropdown.
2) Click the ˅ symbol next to Account at the top of the MetaMask extension and select Add account or hardware wallet.

3) Choose Hardware wallet and continue to the next page.

4) MetaMask will prompt you to select your Ledger device. Select your device and click Connect.

5) MetaMask will display a list of Flare addresses derived from your Ledger's recovery phrase. Select the account(s) you wish to use and click Unlock.
Your Ledger account is now visible in MetaMask, marked with a "Ledger" tag.
Using your Ledger
With your Ledger-secured account connected, you can now fund it and interact with the Flare ecosystem.
Funding your account
To get started, you need to send FLR (for Flare) or SGB (for Songbird) to your new Ledger address.
- In MetaMask, ensure your Ledger account is selected.
- Click on the account name at the top to copy your address.
- Send assets to this address from an exchange or another wallet. The balance will appear in MetaMask once the transaction is confirmed.
Sending assets
1) In MetaMask, click Send.
2) Enter the recipient's address and the amount.

3) Confirm the details in the MetaMask prompt.
4) MetaMask will now wait for your hardware wallet. On your Ledger device, you must carefully review the transaction details (amount and recipient address).
5) If everything is correct, scroll through all details and press both buttons on your device to Approve the transaction.
Adding Wrapped FLR (WFLR) or other tokens
Your FLR and SGB balances will appear automatically. For other tokens like WFLR, you may need to import them manually.
To add WFLR to the Flare Mainnet:
1) In MetaMask, under the Tokens tab, click Import tokens.
2) In the Token contract address field, paste the official WFLR contract address: 0x1D80c49BbBCd1C0911346656B529DF9E5c2F783d

3) The token symbol (WFLR) and decimals should auto-fill. Click Add custom token and then Import tokens.
